Emerald Isle is part of the Crystal Coast, which is a barrier island, part of the southern outer banks of North Carolina. There are four towns on the island, Emerald Isle is the largest, but its still a little town, about 4000 people.
Our place is right off the bridge on the west side. It seems that most of the homes along the beach are rentals, and it is certainly a tourist town, but not overwhelmingly so(though people who live here might think differently).
Almost as soon as you cross the bridge to the mainland(about a 5 min drive), the tourist aspect disappears. Marine Corps Camp Lejeune is real close by and so we've seen a lot of military jets and helicopters, the boys love that. We're on the ocean side of the island, but the other side is on the Bogue Sound, and it is very beautiful too, we want to explore that side of the island while we're here.
